Winter is finally over!

Planting Hay field 2

So we have finally reached spring. A friend of ours offered to help us plant the front 7 acres with hay and the back 7 with pasture seed. There isn’t a whole lot of difference between the two except the presence of alfalfa in the hay and not in pasture. Apparently it doesn’t hold up well to being stomped on by livestock. Even though we have no livestock, the planting of seed should last approximately 5 years or so. Our friend paid for the seed and fuel for tilling. Tom helped by driving our tractor and spreading the seed. The first two years our friend will cut the hay and gets all of it. In year 3, we will split the hay/pasture and it may be that we sell him any we don’t need.
